PAINFUL BONE TUMORS

What you should know

The spine is the most common site for cancer to metastasize to with 40% of all cancer patients presenting with painful spinal metastases. These lesions can cause significant pain and disability resulting in a significant decrease in quality of life. While all major bones present a possible site for cancer spread, the spine represents the most common location and can present with pain and/or fracture.  Unfortunately, many patients rely on opioid medication for pain relief. This can further decrease function and quality of life. Radiation therapy is a common treatment option for patients presenting with spinal metastatic bone disease. However, many patients are not eligible for radiation therapy or have undergone therapy with incomplete results.

Thermal ablation provides a safe, non-opioid alternative for painful bony metastasis. Other benefits of thermal ablation include:

  • Same session biopsy

  • Patients may continue their chemotherapy during treatment

  • Patients on a "chemo-holiday" may be treated

  • Patients with a cancer that has limited options for lines of chemotherapy and who have a new metastatic lesion may have that lesion treated in order to "preserve the line of chemotherapy" and prevent progression to a new and less effective line of chemotherapy.

  • Thermal ablation is consistent with National and International treatment guidelines, including the NCCN Adult Cancer Pain guidelines.

If you or a loved-one has cancer and has been diagnosed with a new lesion or tumor in the spine, call us today to discuss your options. You may qualify for local tumor ablation.
